As a native predator in the southern two-thirds of Minnesota, coyotes have always bee
n present in the Twin Cities, particularly in developing suburbs. Coyotes, like other wildlife, are attracted to the abundance of open and natural spaces in Maple Grove. While coyotes are not considered dangerous to humans, they have at times posed a potential threat to small household pets.
Please take these precautions to ensure the safety of your pet:
- Do not leave pet food or garbage outside.
- Do not leave dogs and cats unattended outdoors for long periods of time.
- Pets must be leashed while walking on sidewalks and trails as well as within parks.
If confronted by a coyote, people are advised to make loud noises and "haze" the animal. This technique, listed in the resources below, will frighten the animal away from the area. If a coyote becomes aggressive and a situation becomes an emergency, call 911.
