1. Are residents required to participate in organics recycling?

No. Residents have the choice to participate or not in organics service.

2. What can a resident do when charged an additional fee for organics but chooses not to participate in organics recycling?

Each garbage hauler has the choice of whether to charge an additional fee or to allow residents to opt-out. Residents may switch to a different hauler that only charges if the service is used.

3. Why does my garbage hauler automatically charge for organics service while other fees (such as yard waste) are applied only when used?

This is a choice made by individual garbage haulers. If a hauler does not give a choice to opt-out, residents may choose to switch to a garbage hauler that offers that option.

5. Is the reason garbage haulers are charging an additional organics fee because Hennepin County is charging garbage haulers?

This is partially the case. Hennepin County requires cities to offer organics recycling in order to continue receiving funding. Consequently, the City of Maple Grove requires haulers to offer the service in order to maintain their refuse haulers license in the city. 

Hennepin County and the City of Maple Grove are not charging garbage haulers, but haulers are required to offer organics pickup. The haulers decide how to capture the cost of providing that service.

6. If I choose to recycle organics for free at the Hennepin County drop-off facility in Brooklyn Park, will my garbage hauler still charge me a fee for organics recycling?

This decision is made by individual haulers. If your garbage hauler chooses to charge you regardless of whether you participate in their organics service or not, you may switch to a hauler that allows you to opt-out.
